Discover the art of Aotearoa

Immerse yourself in the rich traditions of Māori art with Mokoia Art Studio. Our workshops and classes offer a unique journey into Raranga (weaving) and Whakairo (carving), connecting you with culture and creativity.

Our workshops & classes

Mokoia Art Studio is proud to offer unique hands-on experiences in traditional Māori art forms. Each class is designed to provide not just artistic skill, but also a deeper understanding of Mātauranga Toi Tukuiho (Māori Heritage Art creation).

Raranga - weaving classes

Learn to weave your very own kete. Our beginners class will introduce you to basic weaving techniques and the tikanga (customs) associated with this beautiful art form.

Whakairo - carving classes

Discover the art of Māori carving. Our beginners class covers basic drawing and carving techniques, alongside the tikanga inherent in whakairo.

What makes us unique

Our classes are more than just learning a craft; they are a kinesthetic journey incorporating karakia (prayers), tikanga, and te reo (Māori language) relevant to the artwork you create.

Hands-on cultural learning

At Mokoia Art Studio, we believe in learning by doing. Our workshops offer a deep dive into Māori art, ensuring you leave with not just a beautiful creation, but also a richer understanding of its cultural significance.

Who can attend?

Our classes are open to participants aged 16 years and onwards. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to deepen your understanding, you're welcome to join our creative community.
